Toyota vs Godzilla

Toyota vs. Godzilla

Watching the latest Toyota Tundra commercial, and realizing what it really means, reminds one of watching Mike Tyson fight when he was young…there is a creeping feeling of dread and inevitability concerning the outcome.

Having identified the next automotive frontier to conquer, Toyota has commenced the process of dismantling their opponents, and–in the very best Sun Tzu (legendary general and author of ‘Art of War’) tradition–they are using their own tactics against them. In the long run, it may not matter that U.S. automakers have been building great trucks for decades and still do.

Because ‘The Great American Truck’ has long been marketed as a masculine icon, nearly all previous advertising campaigns have been an effort to out-macho the next guy. There is a rich tradition in the truck-commercial world to have the gruffest, manliest voice talk about the product in an inspiring way, but Toyota has dangerously upped the ante with this latest Tundra voice-over actor…this guy makes Sam Elliott sound like a giggling schoolgirl.

As soon as American ad guys realized that folks knew that Toyota was building many of their cars and trucks here in the States, they switched to an old-time ‘History of America’ pitch. You know…”We have been building these since they were flying over Pearl” and the like. But these little sideshows are really just a distraction from the real game: At some point, it will come back to the product– the price, the quality, the cost of operation, the rate of depreciation…you know, the money.

In Toyota plants across the world, a single worker is expected to stop the assembly line if he thinks there is a problem or if he believes that there is a way to improve the process. In the U.S., labor unions are quite effective at fostering a variety of things, but creative thinking and individual recognition ain’t among ‘em. Not to say it doesn’t happen, couldn’t happen, but it is difficult to imagine one of our boys stopping the assembly line. Well, you know, without being hit in the face with a baseball bat.

The U.S. automakers most directly in the line of Tundra fire are obviously Ford and Chevy. This might actually be a good thing, because if people take the time to put all their options through the paces, they may find (to their surprise) that there is little–if anything–to choose between makes.

But what if we find that we are unable to fight them in the quality arena? That our powers of persuasion are blunted by superior voice-over actors? How soon will it be before we start thinking the unthinkable…that awakening their ancient foe from his Mothra-induced slumber might really be our last, best hope? And what message would that send to our children, when they ask–and they will ask–if there was any other way we could have competed for this business? “Daddy, why did we wake the monster”?

Oh…the humanity!

Audi Lights

Posted by: orchard-farm-fire   in Automotive Information

Audi Lights

As we all know lights are important no matter where you are. Sunlight is the very thing that makes the day and during night we need all the artificial lighting sources to help us see. The artificial light is the resource which we need when the Sunlight is not present. This is exactly the case when we are on the road at night. We need to see a few very important things out there: where we are going, where others are going and the way they are moving. We should be able to see if someone is crossing the road or another vehicle is stopping right in front of us. We also should see that on time in order to adjust to the new situation.

Audi tail lights are made to provide very specific information that is critical when we are on the road. However there are some cases which will prevent these important light sources from providing the light we require.
When the tail lights are aging they will corrode like everything else which is based on metal. The problem with corrosion is that it will “eat” the metal parts of your car because of the oxygen in the air. This is hard to avoid. The only real protection is to prevent the oxygen from reaching the metal surface which is possible only for limited time.

The result could be a bad ground inside the tail lights. The ground is the thing which makes the electricity work. If it is not good enough the lights will begin to flicker and it is possible for them to quickly burn.
One good symptom that the ground problem exists will be to have no light at all. If that happens everyone knows there is a problem. Sometimes other lights are dimming when the tail lights turn on. This could be hard to catch but if you feel that your light is changing be sure to make few tests to see if this is really the case. The lights may pulse too if the blinkers are on.

Of course all these symptoms could be caused by something simple like for example a problem in one or more light bulbs. This happens because when the light bulbs work they burn. This process is slow but eventually the wire inside of them will burn out. Before that happens completely it will make you some troubles and you should find which one is the bulb causing all the troubles and replace it.
If you check all the bulbs and they are fine you should take another approach. Sometimes replacement of the entire tail light assembly is required. In any case a professional technician could help you determine where the problem is and fix it on time before the damage spreads to other lights.

This could happen too. It happens because if one bulb is not working fine it will reflect to the condition of the other light sources. The first will burn out eventually but when it does others may already be damaged beyond the proper working state. This will reflect to the new one you will put when you replace the not working one. Soon after that the condition of the other lights will worsen and they will damage the new one too causing the entire system to break down.

Avoiding this could be very simple if you check your car in service from time to time. However not many people do that. This is very understandable because a check like this will take time which most of us don’t have or don’t want to use for these issues.
However you will make your life easier if you learn to see when the light is changing because you will be able to react quickly and prevent bad situations like having no light at all when outside a town during the night.

There are many things that could be said about the fog lights too. You don’t use them all the time and it will be good if they work when you need them. They are dependent on a few things but since you can’t prevent them from occurring you could do only one thing – check them from to time. It is just like the rest of the lights in your car.
However one very discussed issue today is if we should use LEDs in our Audi or not. LEDs look good but if you ask around you will see that many will tell you that they are not bright enough.

The problem is that they may be right. It is true that for a long time the LED technology made only dim lights and in not many colours. If these old dim lights are used in your car this could be a complete disaster.
This may not be the case if you use LEDs which are from the latest technology on the market. They are bright enough and the light they produce will be cheaper because it will use less energy. They will also last for a long period of time because LEDs are not “burning” through the process of energy transformation – electricity to light.

LEDs come in many colours today and to use them for the interior section of your car could be the best thing you could do about your lighting system. This is exactly the case – you should use LEDs where they can show their best. Of course the interior of the car is important but what will happen on the outside?

To use the LED system for your primary headlight source will not be such a good idea. The reason is not because of their brightness. They are bright but they are directed in only one direction. In order to spread them wider you will need more sources and highly sophisticated system.
When talking about the tail lights on the other hand – LEDs could do the trick. They don’t make only one colour light which then should be filtered to become red. The LEDs could make the red light naturally. This is because of the technology they use.

The final conclusion is that LEDs could be fine for everything other than the headlights and fog lights in your car. They will cost less and could be a fine investment.

Audi History

Posted by: orchard-farm-fire   in Automotive Information

Audi History

Audi is a car manufacturing company with a big history. Data about it is provided in many places today which come to say how proud the owners of this manufacturer are. There are in fact many things that make them proud.

The foundation of the company is on 14 November 1899. This is the date when August Horch (1868 - 1951) established the company A. Horch & Cie which was the starting point of Audi that we know today. This company was established in the Ehrenfeld district of Cologne where August Horch made his first car model. The car was finished during 1901 and in March of the next year the company was moved to Reichenbach in Saxony.
Two years later the company was converted to share-issuing company. During that time another change of location took place. On the same year – 10 May 1904 a company in Zwicka was established by the name A. Horch & Cie. Motorwagen-Werke AG.

It is interesting to know that right-hand drive originated from the age of horses where carriages were used. The coachman sat in the right-hand side of this vehicle and that was lately implemented in the first car model August Horch developed but later Audi were the first to offer another solution which came to be really better. This solution is the left-hand driving. It made possible for safer way of driving because the driver has a better view on the oncoming traffic. All maneuvers are easier when using a left-hand driving and this is the reason why even today it is most commonly used. The first car which uses the left-hand drive is called Audi Type K and this happened on 1921.

The year 1926 is really significant because during it the first eight-cylinder car was introduced by Horchwerke AG of Zwickau. The Horch was the name of that car and it was the first German eight-cylinder car to go into volume production. Paul Daimler designed the engine with double overhead camshafts. They were driven by shaft set vertically to the whole camshafts body. This made possible for a 60 horsepower engine to be created.

Two years later in 1928 the first DKW car appeared. That happened because Rasmussen finally got the powerful engine he needed. That engine is 600 cc, 15 hp in the form of two-cylinder motorcycle unit.
Rasmussen got the majority of shares in Audiwerke AG. in 1928 and he made the DKW small car be with front-wheel drive. It was later produced in large numbers in the same company. This event happened in 1931 and the car had a wooden body. An imitation of leather was made on the wooden body and the old two-stroke engine was used to power the car.

Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer got together on 29th June 1932 to create the new Auto Union AG. This was a pretty big event because these 4 brands were the Saxon car manufacturing giants. Together they made their head office in Chemnitz. They were able to serve the complete production process and they made many models – even luxury saloon cars.

In the next year – 1933 at the Berlin motor show Auto Union AG presented to the general public the first standard-size passenger car with front-wheel drive. For that car a six-cylinder engine was used.
A year after that a new design for a better aero dynamical appeal won a race and it greatly increased the popularity of Auto Union. The winning racing car was based on designs of Ferdinand Porsche. The six-cylinder engine was installed on the back side of the vehicle behind the driver. That made possible for the less aero dynamical resistance to occur and less power was lost due to that.

A new head office of the company was founded in Chemnitz in 1936. During the same year the whole manufacturing process was placed there too with the main facilities for design, development and testing.
In 1937 a speed of 400 km/h was exceeded by an Auto Union racing car. That world record proved that this company made the most of their cars – lightweight, extreme engine power of 545 horsepower and a fine aero dynamical design. Even today we talk with respect about such a high speed and we could only imagine what a high-tech product these cars were for their time.

In 1938 Auto Union AG were the first to make crash tests. They wanted to see the different ways that could happen and this made possible for further and better designs regarding the safety of the passengers. This is a major issue in the industry today and we should pay our respect to the first one whom though about it.

Civilian production was interrupted because of the war in May 1940 and the company began production mainly for military purposes. Special vehicles were developed during that time which were more durable and with the ability to last even in more harsh conditions.
In 1945 Auto Union was wiped from existence with the orders of the Soviet military administration in Germany. The plants were dismantled as reparations and all assets of the company were lost during that process. In 1948 the company was deleted from the Commercial Register and 17 August 1948 is stated as its last day.

On 3 September 1949 a new company was established by the name Auto Union GmbH in Ingolstadt. Some loans from the Bavarian state government and Marshall Plan made that possible. The production process started in the same year.

Many events occur in the future of this company and everything that happened made possible for the foundation of Audi as we know it today. New world records were made and new designs were created. In 1991 design studies made possible for Audi quattro Spyder to occur and another good design with the name Audi Avus quattro.

In 1993 some aluminum elements made the cars more lightweight which was a tendency for many years.
One of the latest significant things that happened was in March 1994. This is when Audi AG presented a new car model – the Audi A8. This was a major attraction in the Geneva Motor Show.

Two Fuel Consumption Tips

Posted by: orchard-farm-fire   in Automotive Information

Two Fuel Consumption Tips

Every time gas prices are raised our problems seem to rise with them, the more expensive gas means less trips or more money out of pocket. The seemingly ever increasing gasoline prices keep people on their tip-toes, since this not only affects how much you and your family travel but it will also modify your budget and the lifestyle, and when that is required, it is never good news.

Needless too say, with the recent rises gasoline prices, the things seem to get grayer and grayer for more and more people, unfortunately.

Yet, if you find yourself in such a situation what is the best thing to do, or what other choices do you have? In this article, I will discuss a few tips for such situations, but it is no secret that the main point of this is the reduction of your overall fuel consumption. By simply lowering the number of gallons you need every month you will find yourself with the same budget range.

The key points to doing these are:

-Unnecessary trips are simply out

Everybody loves going away for the weekend almost every weekend to chill out their tired brains because of those tiring work hours and annoying schedules. Sundays seem to be the main key to peace, quiet and relaxation.

However, in order to find that you need to take your car out for a ride, with your family or alone and start driving towards the nearest forest or canyon. Well, the bad news comes here, because fuel consumption can be seriously reduced by cutting these Sunday trips, or simply by lowering their frequency.

Yet, that does not mean you have to stay at home, you can go around with your bicycle and this way exercise a bit, or go to your friends or pick the bus to the nearest town and visit a whole new place and return in the evening. This will also change your horizons a bit because you will not always be in your own medium, but you will have to interact with others as well.

You can look around for other ways to go on trips as well; maybe your friends are organizing something next weekend. Another good tip based on this subject is to try to reduce the supermarket visits as much as you can. Try to make all your shopping trips in one day.

- How about going with the bus at work today

This means that if you can, and if it is in your way enough and really do not need the car at work, you can take the bus rather than consume your own fuel just to go to the office and back.

You can save that for the weekend if that is more valuable for you. Of course, things do are not the same for those that do not have their office near a bus station. However, there is always the car pool. Ask some of your colleague’s maybe you will find one willing to pick you up in the morning and leave you at home in the afternoon.

No More Squeals with a Honda Brake Disc

Posted by: orchard-farm-fire   in Automotive Information

No More Squeals with a Honda Brake Disc

While your Honda car is great with engine performance, another thing you can be proud of is its efficient braking system. The company makes sure that your car’s strong engine performance is coupled with an extremely reliable braking system. To guarantee its reliability, Honda adopted the disc brake system and installed it in its vehicles. This system is ideal since it helps delay early wear and tear, self adjusting, and water resistant. The Honda brake disc is one of the integral parts in the brake disc system.

Braking systems generate a lot of heat. When this heat is accumulated, it causes the brake parts’ early wear and tear. That is why a Honda brake disc have holes that are also called cooling fins. The cooling fins allow the excess heat to dissipate, Thus maintaining the good condition of braking components. Also, brake discs absorb the excess heat, keeping it away from the other brake parts. Honda brake discs are made of materials that are very good heat conductors like metal alloy. They have a series of slots cutting from the edge into the center as well. These slots provide a larger amount of space for better airflow.

But even though Honda uses quality materials to produce the Honda brake discs, natural wear and tear can still occur. Also, dirt like dust and mud can get into the slots and block the airway, reducing the airflow. Furthermore, corrosion can cause cracks and gouges to form on the brake discs’ surface. Signs of brake disc damage are vibrating steering wheels and high-pitched squeals when the car stops. When this happens, replacing them with a Honda brake disc is a must. We offer top notch Honda brake discs from our online catalog. And as they are offered at discounted prices, you can save money but still get quality braking performance.
